LCL shipments explained
LCL (Less than Container Load) means an organic consignment shares a container with other shippers’ cargo, consolidated at origin and deconsolidated at destination. It suits smaller volumes that do not fill a container, but sharing space with unknown cargo introduces risks that full-container movement avoids.
Shared-container risk
Because the container holds other parties’ goods, an organic food consignment can be exposed to incompatible cargo — strong odours, moisture, spillage or contamination — and to extra handling during consolidation and deconsolidation. Robust packaging, sealed liners and barrier protection matter more in LCL.
Odour and moisture exposure
Spices, botanicals and aroma-sensitive products can pick up or transfer odours in a shared container, and moisture from other cargo can affect dry products. Protect the product with appropriate barrier packaging and confirm it can withstand shared-container conditions.
When LCL makes sense
LCL is appropriate for trial orders, small volumes or mixed sourcing where a full container is not justified. For larger volumes, FCL reduces handling and shared-cargo risk, and planned mixed-product consolidation gives more control than open LCL.
