Lot Traceability for Organic Export Supply Chains

How lot traceability works in an organic export supply chain from India, covering lot coding, segregation, mass balance and backward and forward tracing.

Growsian Agro coordinates lot traceability within a documented export supply programme. For each order, the relevant product, operator, lot, evidence and destination requirements are aligned before dispatch.

Certification and quality evidence must match the exact product, operator, activity, lot, shipment and destination. A logo or certificate shown out of context is not enough to prove eligibility for every order.

Lot traceability in an organic supply chain

Lot traceability is the ability to follow a defined production lot forward to the customers it was shipped to, and backward to the certified inputs and processes it came from. It is what makes an organic claim, a test result or a complaint actionable, because it ties them to a specific, identifiable quantity of product.

Lot coding and identification

Each lot is given a unique code that stays with the product through processing, packing, storage and dispatch, and that appears on records and documents. Consistent lot coding is what allows a COA, a certificate or a shipment document to be matched to the exact material a buyer receives.

Segregation

Organic and non-organic material, and different lots, must be physically identified and separated through the operation — in storage, on the line and in packing — so that lots do not mix and identity is preserved. Segregation is a physical control; records describe it but do not create it.

Mass balance as a check

Reconciling incoming certified quantity against processing yield, waste, rework, stock and dispatched quantity is a mass-balance check. It helps expose impossible quantities, duplicate claims or unexplained movement, but it is a reasonableness test, not a guarantee, and it does not replace physical segregation. This connects to the wider TraceNet traceability system.

Backward and forward tracing

A defensible chain lets you trace backward from a shipment lot to its source and forward from a certified input to its customers. Agree the lot-coding and traceability expectations for the order so that any later query can be resolved to a lot.
