USDA Organic Certification for Products from India

Understand how the USDA organic route works for products from India. Covers a USDA-accredited certifier, the NOP Import Certificate and 7 CFR Part 205 after the end of the former APEDA–USDA.

Growsian Agro coordinates USDA Organic certification within a documented export supply programme. For each order, the relevant product, operator, lot, evidence and destination requirements are aligned before dispatch.

Products exported from India as USDA Organic must be certified by a USDA-accredited certifier. The former USDA recognition arrangement with APEDA ended, and electronic NOP Import Certificate data is required for imported shipments.

The USDA National Organic Program

Products sold as organic in the United States must meet the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards set out in 7 CFR Part 205. For products from India, this means the operation must be certified to the NOP standard by a USDA-accredited certifying agent — not only to India’s NPOP standard.

USDA-accredited certifier

The operator is certified by a USDA-accredited certifying agent against 7 CFR Part 205 and appears in the USDA Organic Integrity Database. Confirm the certifier’s accreditation and the certified scope for the specific products and activities before treating a product as USDA organic.

The end of NPOP–NOP recognition

The former recognition arrangement under which NPOP certification was accepted for USDA organic no longer applies. NPOP certification on its own does not make a product eligible as USDA Organic. Supply to the United States must be certified to the NOP standard by a USDA-accredited certifier; do not assume an Indian NPOP certificate is sufficient for the US market.

The NOP Import Certificate

Organic consignments to the United States require an electronic NOP Import Certificate that links the specific shipment to the certified operator and the NOP requirements. It is consignment-specific and is confirmed alongside the certifier’s certificate; neither document replaces the other.

Labelling

Organic labelling and use of the USDA organic seal are governed by the NOP labelling rules and the product’s organic percentage category. Approve artwork against the NOP requirements before printing.
