Moisture and oxygen barrier packaging
Some organic products lose quality when exposed to moisture or oxygen — they cake, oxidise, lose aroma or shorten in shelf life. Barrier packaging uses films and structures that limit the transfer of moisture and oxygen into the pack, protecting the product through transit and storage.
What barriers control
A barrier layer slows water-vapour transmission (for moisture-sensitive powders and dried products) and oxygen transmission (for oils, fats and aroma-sensitive products). The barrier needed depends on the product’s sensitivity, the required shelf life and the climate along the route.
Selecting a barrier
- Moisture-sensitive powders and dehydrated products need a moisture barrier and reliable seals.
- Oxygen-sensitive products such as oils, nuts and some botanicals need an oxygen barrier and may need controlled headspace.
- Longer shelf life or humid routes call for higher-specification films or additional protection.
Match the barrier to the product and route rather than applying one film to everything.
