ISPM 15 wood packaging
ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging material — pallets, crates, dunnage and bracing — used in international trade. Many destinations require solid-wood packaging to be treated and marked under ISPM 15 to reduce the risk of moving pests, and non-compliant wood can be refused, treated or returned at the border.
The IPPC mark
Compliant wood packaging carries the IPPC mark, which shows the country, the registered producer or treatment provider and the treatment applied. The mark is what customs and inspection authorities look for; unmarked or incorrectly marked wood is treated as non-compliant.
Treatment and debarking
ISPM 15 requires an approved treatment — typically heat treatment (HT) or, where permitted, fumigation — applied by an authorised provider, and the wood must be debarked. The treatment kills or removes pests in the wood; the mark records that it was done.
When it applies
Requirements depend on the destination and on whether solid-wood packaging is used at all. Alternatives such as plywood or processed board may not be subject to ISPM 15. Confirm the destination rule and use compliant, marked wood where it applies, coordinating with palletisation and container stuffing.
