Cargo insurance and transit risk
Cargo insurance protects against physical loss or damage to the goods in transit. Because risk usually passes to the buyer at origin under FOB, CFR and (for the insurance itself) CIF, it matters that someone insures the cargo for the sea leg and that the cover matches the risk. This page is general information, not insurance advice.
Who bears the transit risk
Under FOB and CFR the buyer carries the transit risk and should arrange cover; under CIF the seller provides cover for the buyer’s benefit, but often at a minimum level. Confirm who insures the cargo and to what level for the specific movement, so the goods are not uninsured for the ocean leg.
Policy terms and exclusions
Cargo policies differ in what they cover and exclude — for example insufficient packing, inherent vice, delay, or moisture damage may be limited or excluded. Read the terms against the product’s real risks (a moisture-sensitive powder has different exposure from a rigid-packed product) and confirm the cover, sum insured and deductible.
Claims evidence
A claim depends on evidence. Preserve the packing and loading records, container condition and seal records, photographs, any survey, and the shipping documents, and give notice within the policy’s time limits. The loading and stuffing records from palletisation and container stuffing are part of that evidence.
